Keto – my experience

On July 5th I decided after much research and consideration to try the Keto or Ketogenic diet. I spoke to a doctor about it and he assured me that the body does not need carbs to survive. He explained that it actually runs better on ketones. I was a bit sceptical. I couldn’t imagine how I couldn’t even eat fruit but I could put butter and coconut oil in my coffee.

I prepped by making sure I had plenty of high fat, low carb food. My goal was to keep my carbs under 20gms.  My macros were set with a goal of  5% carbs, 75% fat and the rest protein. The first week was pretty rough. I experienced increased thirst and a strange lightheadedness. But after the first week I started feeling better. I noticed that my belly bloat disappeared and so did all the gas and swollen ankles. After 4 weeks, I lost 11 pounds. I know most of it was water weight, but a pound is a pound, right? After about 6 weeks, I started eating more carbs and went right back to eating too much sugar. I quit losing weight and now am having a hard time getting back on track. I can’t seem to go more than 1 day at a time staying low carb. I haven’t regained any weight but I don’t feel as good as i did. I think I just got lazy and tired of tracking every bite I take. So, I’m going to let myself take a break and plan to start again on September 1st. I still have 14 pounds to lose. Fat loss is so hard for me. It takes a lot of work and strict dedication. It’s hard for me to get in the right mindset and stay there. I know I can do it, I just gotta get started.
